New Barn Conversion

Where structure meets soul, and passion takes root

Set within an agricultural ridge and furrow field on heavy clay ground, this site began as a wide, characterless expanse – the kind of space that offers infinite opportunity if approached with care and imagination. Our brief was to completely reimagine this landscape and create something that would wrap around and complement a newly converted barn, complete with a contemporary sunroom. From the outset, it was essential that the design didn’t fight against its natural surroundings or compete with the far-reaching views but rather settled into them and frame them – quietly and confidently.

Our clients were downsizing from a large family manor house but brought with them a rich history of gardening and a keen eye for detail. As passionate horticulturalists, they were deeply involved throughout the design journey – something we welcomed and cherished. We wanted this garden not only to suit their new lifestyle but to ensure their love of planting and place could continue to thrive in this next chapter of their lives.

The project began in 2013, with a vision to bring depth, structure and meaning to the open space. We designed a series of flowing garden ‘rooms’ that offer both privacy and openness -intimate areas to retreat to, balanced with those borrowed views across the rolling Wiltshire countryside. The design is rooted in classical structure, softened with a nod to contemporary simplicity that ties in beautifully with the barn’s architectural form.

It’s a garden that reflects its owners – thoughtful, understated, full of passion – and it continues to evolve with them. Built to last, it’s a legacy landscape grounded in both design and devotion.
